    Disciplines of clay target shooting

The types of clay target shooting are grouped into Olympic and sporting disciplines.
Below we will explain the characteristics of each discipline without going into too much detail.

    Olympic clay target shooting

    Olympic Trap

Also known as Trap, it is the most common Olympic discipline.

For this discipline there are 3 machines for each shooting stand (5 stands), launching a target from the right, once in the centre, and one from the left. The shooters compete in groups of six, one shooter at each stand plus one on standby, who rotate successively through the 5 shooting stands. The targets launched are 10 cm.

    Double Trap

In this discipline, three machines positioned in a trench in front of the shooting stands simultaneously launch two targets in pairs, with fixed and divergent flight paths, which the shooter must break with two consecutive shots.

    Skeet

In this discipline the shooter must complete a course of 8 stands arranged in a semicircle. The targets, in sets of 25 targets each, are launched either individually or in pairs from 2 fixed stations. The target is called for with the guard down, i.e. with the shotgun facing down, and the target is released with a certain delay after the call.

    Sporting clay target shooting

There are many variants of sporting clay target shooting. The most common are Universal Trap, Mini-Trap, Compak Sporting and Hunting.

    Universal Trap

The mechanics are very similar to those of Olympic Trap. In Universal Trap there are 5 machines, one per stand. The targets can be launched from any of them regardless of which stand has called for them.

    Mini-Trap

In this discipline only one trap machine is used instead of the 5 used in Universal Trap. For this discipline there are 5 different stands for the shooters competing.

    Compak Sporting

Also known as Sporting. In this discipline the targets are launched from a series of machines set out around the shooting range, imitating the movements of game. The targets are launched individually or in pairs.
6 machines are used on the course. The time between the shooter calling for the target and it being launched is from 0 to 3 seconds.

    Hunting

This discipline, also known as Hunting Trails, is one of the favourite disciplines of hunters as the flight paths of the targets simulate the hunting of birds or rabbits.
For the experience to be as close to hunting as possible, the shooter must call for the target with his shotgun facing down.

    1

    Normal or Standard

These are targets with a diameter of 11 centimetres. They are the most common targets and are used in most clay target shooting disciplines.
    2

    Minis

These targets are smaller than the ones above. Their density is also lower, so they are usually launched at a higher speed than normal.
    3

    Super Minis

This is a very small and very fast target.
    4

    Rabbit

This is a circular target, with the same size as the Standard target, but with a harder and stronger edge. What makes it special and gives it its name is that it is launched from specially adjusted machines so that the target is released with a rolling motion simulating the way a rabbit runs. There is the added difficulty of the irregularity of the trajectories of the targets as they roll.
    5

    Battue

The main distinguishing feature of this target is its thinness. It is a very thin target, the same size as the standard, which tries to simulate the flight of a turtle dove. This target is usually launched upwards.
    6

    American Trap

108 mm targets deliver a steady flight pattern while emulating bird-hunting situations.
